You’re holding on too tight, to demons from the past
Some will bear their crosses, but you will bear the scars
They’re timeless faint reminders, of a troubled, naive few
Picture postcard memories, of a life that we once knew
A nevus on the soul, from cuts that once ran deep
Whether you conceal it now, it’s your memory to keep
You’re not the only one, who carries all that weight
I was there remember? We shared the burdens fate
Now only time can mend the edges, of a fractured heart
And the infiniteness of time, will give the truth its chance
So bathe yourself in happiness, and wash away the mess
You’re holding on too tight, to a life you must digress
What if I said I like you
What if I said it the most
What if I wrote you a poem
And sent it to you in the post
What if you thought about me
What if it made you smile
What if you told me to wait
And I waited a very long while
What if I showed you joy
What if I made you glow
What if I took your hand
And said that I wouldn’t let go
What if you took a chance
What if you opened your heart
What if you felt the pleasure
And then let go of the past
What if I said the ‘L’ word
What if I proved it all
What if I made you happy
And then into love we fall
That Gucci suit and liner
That watch is even finer
African kids dig minerals
And send it all to China
That Dolce scarf and wallet
That jacket in your closet
The way you feed your ego
It makes me want to vomit
That Prada bag and timer
They’re all made by a minor
Think not about young slaves
It will upset your angina
That iphone in your pocket
That Armani chain and locket
As long as you keep buying
You know they will not stop it?
Those glasses are designer
And you sip lattes in the diner
While children grind their fingers
At some factories in China
Let her have her say
She’s shedding all her pain
You may be a man
But you’re not a man today
You led her all the way
She was never there for play
You took too long to tell her
That you always felt the same
It has always been this way
Now maybe it will change
A heart you took from her
And now you take the blame
Let her have her say
She deserves it just the same
And when you say you love her
Let her turn and walk away
Board the crowded boat- then you rock it.
Find the next big thing- then you mock it.
Bite the hand that feeds- then you scoff it.
Mind will hurt and grieve… said the prophet.
Waste the time between- but don’t throw it.
Crush the hope and dream- and you know it.
Move from scene to scene- oh, come off it.
Ego will be pleased… said the prophet.
Laugh at what is said- but don’t say it.
Dues are in the red- but don’t pay it.
Hoard all of the time- then you hock it.
Weaken will the spine… said the prophet.
Make a new mistake- but don’t own it.
Turn again your back- but don’t show it.
Take another heart- then you toss it.
Soul will soon depart… said the prophet.
